Red Poppy & Memorial Day
Besides being a symbol of all that is fashionable and redhead, Red Poppy (the flower in this case, aka a common weed in Europe!) also happens to be synonymous with Memorial Day, a day of remembrance for those who died while in our nation's military service. Celebrated in almost every U.S. State on the last Monday in May, it's a day when loads of people proudly wear a red poppy in their buttonholes as a tribute to our veterans, but have you ever wondered why?
I have! Turns out that it has everything to do with the poem "In Flanders Fields," by John McCrae, 1915. Inspired by McCrae's war poem, American Teacher Miss Moina Belle Michael responded with her own poetry:
'We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies.'
...and so thanks to Miss Moina Michael and eventually Madame Guerin from France, the custom of making and selling artificial red poppies on Memorial Day came to be (which is the custom today in the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia)...

Harem Pants
A must have this season, harem pants have been a wardrobe staple since the last few years and the trend doesn't seem to be dying down going by the Fall Winter 2010 shows, where designers morphed it into a cross between jodhpurs and lungi pants, very reminiscent of the 80s but innovated for the modern day. Styles range from cropped cargo, military style to sarong wraps. Pair it with a blazer or a slouchy top and your good to go in this boho, laid back look.

Anamika Khanna
Anamika Khanna is one of those rare designers who's clothes have more appeal upon touching or wearing than merely getting a glimpse of in pictures. Known for her textures, crinkled fabrics and subdued use of embellishments, these are eclectic, matured, coming of age designs. Grunge, ethnic with a modern twist, her clothes are imbued with her signature style, and even though there is some sameness in her creations, she believes in staying true to her identity.
One of the best designers of India, Anamika's work is sold in stores across the country. She has quite a fan following with loyalists who swear by her fluid churidars (bias cut drawstring gathered hem pants) and tunic tops. This is one very busy designer, a mini Fashion Mogul in the making, quietly operating a vast enterprise from her base in Kolkata. It only takes one outfit; just the feel of it on your skin, besides the comfort factor and uber sophisticated style to get hooked onto Anamika Khanna's clothes forever.
