Cocktail Dresses for New Year's Eve

Still searching for that hot dress to wear on New Years Eve? Here's an aspirational/inspirational post for you. Even though my picks are from the Spring Summer 2011 collections, it's enough to clue you in as to what to look for, the next time you go shopping. You are likely to find fall colours like deep plum, wine, burgundy, purples, dark grey, navy, midnight blue and bottle green besides, nude, caramel, blush and gold. The style and colour you choose eventually, weighs heavily on the event you plan to attend. Like if it's a yatcht party, choosing a flirty chiffon mini dress may not be the way to go on a windy night. Keeping the weather in mind, you are also quite likely to pair your dress with stockings or panty hose.

It need not be a dress, it could also be hot pants with a blazer or jacket, a jumpsuit or a frou frou skirt! You can never go wrong with a sparkly little black dress, the ideal party favourite for New Years Eve and also a safe choice. Nothing speaks red hot like a sizzling red dress. White can also look tres chic, but make sure you wear your little white dress with neon, multi colour or metallic accessories, or else it could easily come off looking like daywear.

Remember, you have to find a dress that not only looks good, but also feels comfortable to dance in! In that sense, tight body con dresses though sexy may constrict movement. A pencil skirt or dress would be nice for an intimate dinner outing, but not if you plan to let your hair down and dance till the wee hours of the morning. Choosing the right pair of heels is also crucial, ideally, pick something you're used to or buy something and give yourself some time till you get used to it! Try to pick an outfit that doesn't require you to wear spanx, body shapers, girdles or a corset. The freer you are, the easier you'll feel.

Prints are huge this season, from floral to graphic digi prints, go bold if you have it in you, and pick a firecracker print to spice up your night while bringing in the New Year. Lace is another big trend, besides sequins, cut-outs, feathers and tulle. Wear shoe boots to make your lace dress look edgy or team with a cropped structured or bolero jacket; think frayed edges, fringe and zipper detail. If you live in a very cold climate, consider matching your dress to your coat. A gold trench or wrap dress, tuxedo suit, sequin pants are other practical yet chic alternatives.

Have fun shopping and enjoy dressing up for what's perhaps the most important night of the year to party.
